With 19 kids and a strict code of conduct that forbids everything from premarital physical contact to celebrating Halloween, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar likely knew from the start that it was only a matter of time before they'd be forced to quash a rebellion.
But they probably weren't prepared to fight a war on multiple fronts.
Most fans believe that Jinger was the original "defiant Duggar."
And while it's true that she's parted with her parents' beliefs in a number of significant ways -- wearing pants, marrying a man her father didn't approve of, relocating to the liberal bastion of Los Angeles -- it seems it's one of her younger brothers who has really tested Jim Bob's patience over the years.
In fact, a new report claims that Josiah Duggar presented such a problem at one point that Jim Bob took drastic action to prevent him from besmirching the family name.
According to Cheat Sheet, Jim Bob arranged Josiah's marriage to Lauren Swanson with the full cooperation of Lauren's father, Wayne Swanson.
The site offers little in the way of evidence, but notes that this is a popular fan theory that jibes with much of what we already know about the Duggars in general and Josiah in particular.
We can corroborate that last part.
Last month, our Duggar insider exclusively revealed to The Hollywood Gossip that Josiah and Jim Bob have been clashing for years and have rarely seen eye-to-eye.
“You need to keep an eye on Josiah,” the source told us.
“He's not mentally stable. Something is gonna crack soon, mark my words," the insider added.
Obviously, on its own, the fractured relationship between Jim Bob and Josiah would not be enough to lead us to the conclusion that JB felt the need to put a swift stop to his son's reckless behavior.
But when you factor in Jim Bob's history of controlling his children's love lives, it starts to seem much more plausible.
Consider, for example, the widely-circulated report that Jim Bob arranged the marriage of Joy-Anna Duggar and Austin Forsyth.
Add to that the fact that Josiah is the only Duggar of his generation to take part in a courtship that didn't result in marriage, and it's not hard to see why his father might have felt the need to take the reins.
Josiah briefly courted Marjorie Jackson back in 2016.
When the couple parted ways, they did so with no official announcement.
Fans only realized the relationship had come to an end when they noticed that Josiah had deleted all of Marjorie's photos from his Instagram page.
We may never know exactly what happened there, but it's been widely rumored that Josiah behaved in a fashion unbecoming a Duggar gentleman, and Jim Bob was less than pleased.
Not long after, Lauren came along, and the rest is history.
These days, Lauren is expecting her first child after suffering a heartbreaking miscarriage earlier this year.
She and Josiah do seem to be happily married -- but that doesn't mean the decision to get hitched was entirely theirs.
