Kody Brown and Meri Brown have not been getting along for quite some time now.
This is not exactly breaking news.
But TLC has posted footage from the upcoming new season of Sister Wives in which it's more clear than ever before that the future isn't very bright for this spiritual husband and wife.
It's downright dark, in fact.
Where did things go wrong? What can we expect between Kody and Brown on episodes that air in 2020?
Scroll down for the latest.
A Challenging Past
Meri and Kody have been "married" for 28 years, but we need to put quotation marks around that term. Why? Because they got legally divorced back in 2014 so that Kody could marry Robyn and adopt her kids.
We know, right? One can't really blame Meri for being bitter over how things played out between her and Kody, which helps explain how their relationship has been falling apart ever since.
Adding to Meri's Frustrations?
She has a beloved daughter named Mariah, but suffered a miscarriage years ago and was told around that time that she's unable to have any more children.
What Was Meri's Lowest Point?
On the romantic side of things, that's easy: She was catfished in 2016. Yes, CATFISHED
, as a man she met and got close to online ending up being a woman in real life.
Have Things Improved at All?
Meri and Kody have tried to mend their relationship, that's for sure. And the new season will find the two back in therapy.
That's a Positive Thing, Right?
In theory, yes. But "he doesn't want to move forward with trying to work things out with me," Meri tells the therapist in a scene from an upcoming episode.
Is Kody Understanding of Meri At Least?
Not really, not in the footage we've seen. Says Kody at one point in a therapy session: "I can never be honest because she's unable to stop playing the victim."
Is There Any Hope for These Two?
They've made it this far, so anything is possible. Meri seems perpetually unhappy and yet remains with Kody.
But the Tension is Palpable
At another point on the new season, Kody will even argue with Robyn about how Meri feels. "I'm constantly doing her dance. Stop defending Meri," he tells this wife in this scene.
Kody Just Doesn't Get It
Robyn tries to make him understand where Meri is coming from; heck, from where many of the women are often coming from. "Plural marriage makes you feel disenfranchised sometimes," she explains to her husband on an episode that will air in 2020.
Where Did Things Leave Off?
On the April 2019 Sister Wives reunion special, both Kody and Meri admitted to a major rough patch -- but also said they were committed to trying to work things out.
A Change in Perspective
"What we've had to do is discover our new baseline," Kody explained to the host at the time, elaborating as follows: "Every marriage has a baseline, and it gently changes through the years for most people."
A New Direction
"Well, Meri and I had an abrupt change," Kody continued. "Different culture, Different religious values, we might have just [gotten a divorce], but we're fortunate enough to be blessed to be a part of a family that is its own culture... So we continue to move forward working on that, steadily moving in a direction where we're just fully mended."
Did Meri Agree with This Assessment?
Kind of. Sort of. "I don't feel like we had an abrupt change, I really don't," she said on this same special. "I feel like the realization of it was probably abrupt, but I think that it was like moving in not a positive direction for a really long time prior to the realization."
Here's to the Future!
"The past is gone," Kody announced on stage at this reunion, trying to remain positive about what lay ahead for him and Meri.
We're Dating Now
That's what Kody emphasized at the time. "I am cutting off everything that was the past," he reiterated. "It's a new date, it's a new girlfriend, it's a new person, but we have a history and we also know each other."
Meri Brown: Hey, Folks!
"I'm looking at a future as well," Meri said in response. "I am, and I have a lot of hope for what could be."
And Yet... We Have Our Doubts
Based on everything we know... based on everything we've heard and read... does anyone out there really think Kody and Meri are going to last?
