If you saw the hashtag "#RihannaIsPregnant" trending, you may have assumed that the pop legend had announced that she was expecting.
But as you probably already know, social media is a strange and complicated place, where things are often not quite as they seem.
While it's true that RiRi referenced giving birth to a baby girl in a recent interview, it's important to consider the context of her comments.
The singer hosted her 5th annual Diamond Ball in New York City on Thursday night, and while working the red carpet, she stopped and spoke with Essence.
"I'm a black woman. I come from a black woman who came from a black woman who came from a black woman and I'm going to give birth to a black woman," she told the outlet.
"That's who I am. It's the core of who I am in spirit and in DNA. And I always stand up for what I believe in and who I love and who I know, who I respect."
The interview went viral, but sadly, not because of Rihanna's important remarks about her pride in her heritage and identity.
Rather, the brief remark about giving birth gave rise to the now-persistent rumor that Rihanna is pregnant.
For the record, similar reports have surfaced just about every year that she's been famous, but that hasn't stopped fans from buying into this one.
As always, this has led some obsessives to pore over old photos of the singer in search of a baby bump (no results, thus far).
But fortunately, on Twitter, most of the top responses were humorous, rather than hurtful.
"I found out Rihanna is pregnant and I've cancelled my appearance at school today," tweeted one fan. "IM TIRED OF BEING CHEATED ON."
Another wrote, "Rihanna is pregnant. This is a lot to take in right now."
And naturally, there were many jokes relating to RiRi's long-awaited ninth studio album, now four years in the making.
"Someone just said that Rihanna is pregnant with the album not the baby I can't," wrote one user.
"Rihanna is pregnant??? the baby's name is probably album cuz we never gonna see it lmfao," another tweeted.
For her part, Rihanna has not commented on the rumors, which is not terribly surprising, given how tight-lipped she's been about her personal life in recent years.
While we know that she's still dating Hassan Jameel, little else is known about her private circumstances.
But we're sure when she's ready to have a baby or release an album, she'll make the announcement when she sees fit.
And millions of fans will promptly lose their minds.
