A week and a half ago, Justin Bieber challenged Tom Cruise to an MMA fight for no apparent reason.
Fans raised their eyebrows and laughed, and were reassured by reports saying that the Biebs harbors no such desire.
But now a new, very credible report says that Justin has agreed to the fight during a secret phone call. Is this really happening?
"I wanna challenge Tom Cruise to fight in the octagon," Justin Bieber tweeted on Sunday, June 9 for reasons that we cannot fathom.
"Tom," the Biebs taunted. "If you don't take this fight you're scared."
"And," he vowed. "You will never live it down."
"Who is willing to put on the fight?" Justin asked the global audience of millions who read his tweets.
But when people asked Justin about this in person, he said that he was just joking, that he'd tweeted out the dare on impulse.
Apparently Justin is also a huge fan of Tom Cruise, despite having never met him.
Weird, but not as alarming as an actual desire to play the meat version of Rock'em Sockem Robots, right?
Except apparently, the Biebs was either lying or had a huge change of heart.
TMZ is now reporting that one secret phone call has begun to lay the groundwork for the fight to really happen.
According to them, Art Emanuel called Scooter Braun last Friday.
Art Emanuel is the co-CEO of the William Morris Endeavor agency.
That agency owns UFC.
Apparently the phone call then conferenced in Dana White, the current president of the UFC.
TMZ reports that Ari noted that a fight like this would be incredible if it happens -- and that it should definitely happen.
In the mean time, Dana said that he was "100%" down with this plan.
Scooter Braun's take on the conversation was reportedly that Justin would go through with it ... if Tom Cruise is up for it.
Unlike Justin, Tom has not yet spoken out about the idea of pummeling the other man in the octagon.
But Ari stated during the call that he strongly believes that Tom will go for it.
(TMZ does not explain why Ari is so confident about this -- maybe it's bluster, maybe he knows something)
Most 56-year-old men with plenty of money wouldn't feel compelled to step into the ring with a 25-year-old.
But Tom doesn't exactly think or make decisions like the rest of us, what with all of the thetans clouding our judgment.
So we wouldn't want to predict what Tom will actually do.
Let's put ourselves in Hailey's tiny, delicate shoes for a moment.
She just married this dude last year. It hasn't even been a year since the Biebs popped the question, right?
They didn't have the big, splashy wedding that you'd imagine for a couple of their caliber.
They haven't had their first wedding anniversary yet.
Now, her husband who admittedly has mental health issues is impulsively challenging a dude he's never met to a fight.
If Hailey were a very different person, she might be overjoyed that Justin's going into the octagon.
We here at THG have shared our opinions about whether Justin Bieber can beat Tom Cruise, and the results don't look great for the Biebs.
If Hailey weren't who she is, she might be giddily wondering if she's about to become a very rich widow.
But that's not who she is. She loves Justin and would be horrified if he received an all-too-common serious injury that can arise from fights.
Honestly? We'd be morbidly curious about seeing this fight play out, but we don't want to see the Biebs hurt.
