Tragic news broke over the weekend; Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson have split, breaking off their engagement.
Fans are divided as to whether Ariana and Pete will get back together, while others just want to know what really went wrong.
A new report explains exactly why they broke up.
An inside source tells Entertainment Tonight that the main factor behind Ariana and Pete's split was ... bad timing.
"Ariana made the final decision," the insider explains.
"It was time to realize this wasn’t the right time for them," the source summarizes.
"And," the insider continues. "Pete is incredibly heartbroken."
"Pete is still so in love with her," the source dishes. "He wanted his whole world to revolve around her but she was emotionally unavailable."
Ariana wasn't deliberately unavailable -- but the stresses in her life became overwhelming. And Pete knows this.
As the insider details: "He realizes she was at her limit with pressure from everyone and everything around her."
"There were days she just wanted to run away from the world," the source notes.
The insider explains that her desire was "just to get some peace and quiet and peace of mind."
"Pete," the source says. "Had to give her that space out of love."
Pete Davidson is not the only one who is giving Ariana space as she takes time for self-care.
On Saturday, she had to cancel a performance at F--k Cancer’s inaugural Barbara Berlanti Heroes fundraising gala.
(Named in honor of the mother of Greg Berlanti, the record-smashing television and film producer)
Ariana's manager, Scooter Braun, explained that Ariana "needs this time."
From last year's terrorist attack to the sudden and tragic death of her ex, Mac Miller right after she returned to the spotlight ... it's all too much.
"Ariana and Pete didn’t plan this abrupt split," the insider clarifies. "But they both know this breakup is the right decision for them right now."
"Their family and friends stand behind their decision entirely," the source reports.
"And," the insider continues. "Ariana’s team feels this will give her time to heal."
We certainly hope so!
That said, their bond still means a lot to them.
"They got engaged because they both felt this instant connection," the source says. "And even now after their split they are still deeply in love."
Contrary to what some Disney films say, you need more than love to make a relationship work.
The insider says: "But their timing has truly affected their plans and made it impossible for them to make it work at the moment."
"They have a very special connection," the source affirms.
The insider notes that this is "partly because Pete has been there for Ariana during a painful time in her life."
"She will forever and always be grateful to Pete," the source notes.
Ariana's return to the spotlight was happy, but it coincided with her relationship with Pete -- which made dating a bit of a challenge.
"They felt constantly under a microscope," the insider reveals.
That's true -- they were a couple of great interest, both on social media and in the physical world.
"They felt that they literally had no privacy," the source laments. "And it really took a toll on their relationship."
Relationships need privacy to blossom.
On the plus side, the two of them were seen looking friendly at Saturday Night Live over the weekend -- but just friendly.
"They have not stopped talking since they made the decision to split," the insider reveals.
"And in fact," the source adds. "They plan on trying to stay close friends or maybe one day even more than that."
"They are remaining positive and looking forward to a future together where they may be best friends," the insider dishes.
"And," the source says, fans will be relieved to hear that they "still haven’t ruled out the possibility of one day making their relationship work."
On top of the tragic confluence of events, there were some other real-life obstacles to their still very new relationship.
"They just know that they cannot be engaged right now," the insider explains. "Or be in a serious relationship"
This is "because of the stress Ariana has had to face recently and the stress of their careers."
"Pete’s acting career has taken off," the source notes. "He signed on to so many projects and feature films and Ariana has a huge album to promote."
"And they just barely have time for that," the insider admits.
"They want to make sure if they ever do decide one day to make it work," the source says. "That they make their relationship a priority."
It sounds like this breakup was a very mature decision.
"They both want a family one day," the insider adds. "And realize they will have to step back a bit from their careers to do that."
"They love and trust each other so much," the source affirms. "And want to keep the option open for a further together."
That shows a lot of wisdom.
Fans of course have strong opinions, one way or the other.
We all do.
But ultumately, this will be up to Ariana and Pete and circumstances.
We all need to be prepared to respect that, whatever they decide.
