John Mara, the 22-year old nephew of the New York Giants owner, was arrested this week and charged with felony assault stemming for an incident on New Year’s Eve.

According to police, Mara is accused of hitting an individual in the head with a bottle late last year, causing life-threatening injuries that required immediate surgery.

Mara was arrested on Friday, posted $150,000 bail and will be arraigned on March 8.

Mara, a senior at Fairfield University, turned himself in after learning a warrant had been issued.

But his lawyer told The Associated Press that he’s confident “a jury will find him not guilty,” as some witnesses allegedly say Mara was defending himself against a larger party goes.

Conviction on first-degree assault carries with it a prison sentence of one to 20 years.
