Officials in India’s Assam state have suspended politician Bikram Singh Brahma after he was accused of raping a woman - and subsequently beaten by women in a village.
Clips posted to the web showed him being stripped of his shirt and slapped by several women in response to the allegation. Take a look at the surprising footage:
According to the BBC, Bikram Singh Brahma was detained on Thursday after the victim’s husband reported the alleged rape, which shocked his community.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told the BBC his action was “condemnable” and he should be punished ... though this was likely not what he had in mind.
Pressure has grown for tougher action after a woman was raped and attacked in Delhi in December and later died. Five men were arrested in that incident.
