We’re surprised too!
It turns out that some of our favorite actors are also pretty talented musicians (okay, some more than others).
These 18 actors are either currently a member of a band or they’ve been a member of one in the past. See which actors really love to rock it out below!
Juliette Lewis
Though Juliette Lewis is probably best known for her roles in films like What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and Natural Born Killers, she was also the lead singer of her rock band, Juliette and the Licks, which was formed in 2003.
Jared Leto
We all remember Jared Leto as Jordan Catalno from My So Called Life. But when is isn’t acting, Leto is the lead singer of his band, 30 Seconds to Mars, which has been active since the late 90s.
Bruce Willis
Yep. Bruce Willis is even cooler than you thought he was. When he isn’t busy acting, he’s singing with his band, Bruce Willis and The Accelorators.
Adam Brody
Adam Brody’s character played in a band on Gilmore Girls before he headed over to The O.C. Turns out, in real life, he’s a drummer in the indie rock band Big Japan.
Dennis Quaid and the Sharks
Dennis Quaid is one talented guy. Besides being an incredible actor, he’s also a pretty talented musician. Check out his vocals in his band, Dennis Quaid and the Sharks.
Jada Pinkett Smith
Jada Pinkett Smith is already part of a musical family, but what you may not have known is that when she rocks out, she REALLY rocks it out. Her metal band, Wicked Wisdom, was formed in 2002.
Ryan Gosling
It’s true. Heartthrob Ryan Gosling isn’t just the actor who won everyone’s heart in The Notebook, he’s also part of the rock duo, Dead Man’s Bones, along with Zach Shields.
Ed Westwick
Ed Westwick is known for playing a bad boy, first with Gossip Girl and now with Wicked City. How fitting is it, then, that he’s also the lead singer of an indie rock band called “The Filthy Youth”?
Taylor Momsen
Another musician you’ll recognize from Gossip Girl? Taylor Momsen. She apparently quit acting to focus on her music career, and is now the lead singer of the rock band, “The Pretty Reckless.”
James Marsters
James Marsters showed off his singing voice in the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but that’s not the only way you can hear him sing. The actor who played Spike is also the front man for the rock band, Ghost of the Robot.
Jack Black
Jack Black is definitely a jack of all trades. He’s an actor, a comedian, a producer, and a musician. His American comedy rock duo, Tenacious D, was formed in 1994 and is still going strong.
Maya Rudolph

Here’s a reason to love Maya Rudolph even more than you already do. Before she joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, Maya Rudolph was both a back-up singer and a keyboardist for the rock band, “The Rentals.”
Keanu Reeves
Keanu Reeves is best known for his roles in major films including Speed, The Matrix, and Point Break, but he was also the bassist for the alternative rock band, “Dog Star,” until 2002.
Zooey Deschanel
You probably already knew that the New Girl actress had a pretty amazing singing voice (that is, assuming you watch the show), but she’s also part of a pretty incredible rock duo with M. Ward. They call themselves “She and Him.”
Kevin Bacon
It turns out that the actor known for Footloose and A Few Good Men is a man of many talents. Kevin Bacon is part of a country/folk duo called “The Bacon Brothers” with his brother, Michael (hence the name).
Frankie Muniz
We’re as surprised about this one as you are. That’s right. Malcom in the Middle star Frankie Muniz joined the rock band, “Kingsfoil,” as a drummer in 2012.
Russell Crowe
Russell Crowe is more than just a talented actor, director, and producer. He also performed lead vocals and guitar for the Australian rock band, “Odd Foot of Grunts,” and later formed “The Ordinary Fear of God.” Impressive.
Jackson Rathbone
Chances are, you recognize Jackson Rathbone as part of the Cullen family. He played Jasper on The Twilight films, but he also spent plenty of time rocking out with the funk rock band “100 Monkeys” until 2012.
