It turns out that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth splitting after about eight months of marriage was just the beginning of the story.
Almost immediately, Miley and Kaitlynn Carter, Brody Jenner's ex, were spotted together.
People -- including Brody Jenner's own mom -- have been giving Kaitlynn a hard time. Brody's telling the world to cut that out right now.
On Friday, Brody Jenner took to Instagram to share an important message with his followers.
"There is far too much negativity being directed at someone," Brody wrote.
He didn't need to call out Kaitlynn by name. Everyone knew that he was referring to his ex.
He added that she is someone "[whom] I love and care about very much."
Brody expressed: "I feel the need to set the story straight."
To be clear, this is not a vaguepost. He does actually mention her name.
"Kaitlynn and I have been best friends for 6 years," Brody reminded his fans and followers.
"And," he affirmed. "We continue to be."
Not everyone can manage that after a split. Good for both of them!
"We, like many others before us and many after us," Brody shared. "Grew in different directions over those same 6 years."
"Kaitlynn is a wonderful person," Brody made clear.
Sometimes, people feel that they need to pick sides after a breakup and they insult one party to impress the other.
Clearly, that will not work with Brody and Kaitlynn.
He sang his ex's praises, affirming that she is "beautiful and fun to be with."
Kaitlynn, he expresses, has and will be "always a positive force in my life."
"We decided the best move for both of us was to keep our love for each other strong," Brody explained.
"But," he continued, to "move forward separately with our lives."
That's rough. Sometimes, it's almost impossible to make that call for a serious couple.
"I respect Kaitlynn," he preclaimed. "And care deeply about her."
Brody firmly concluded: "She deserves to be able to move forward in her life with respect and happiness."
In other words: stop saying hateful things about Kaitlynn and stop expecting him to applaud you for doing so.
Castmate Brandon Thomas Lee commented "strong" under the post.
Kaitlynn herself even commented, leaving a red heart emoji of appreciation.
Knowing how vile and hateful people on the internet can be when they operate under a veil of relative anonymity, she must have seen a lot of nastiness.
Some of the hate would have come from thirsty fans who resent her because they wanted to be with Brody.
Other harassment would come from bigots who hated hearing about her and Miley and wanted to let her know.
Honestly? It would be great to see more exes, celebrity and otherwise, stick up for each other like this.
Too many people seem to think that the only alternative to a loving romance is antagonism.
Brody and Kaitlynn aren't enemies. It doesn't really sound like there's even a bad guy here.
What a refreshing dose of maturity ... especially from a pair of The Hills: New Beginnings stars.
