Earlier this year, fans were excited at reports that Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton would announce their engagement very soon.
But with no wedding materializing even months later, fans wonder what's up.
Thanks to a new report, we know exactly what is holding them back: Gwen's religious beliefs.
Us Weekly reports that fans shouldn't worry -- because Gwen and Blake still feel ready to wed.
But apparently they have put their wedding plans on hold for the moment.
The blame lies at the feet of one of the world's oldest and most controversial institutions: the Catholic Church.
See, Gwen is divorced from her ex-husband, Gavin Rossdale.
But she feels that she needs to take it a step further if she wants God to bless her next union.
Apparently, Gwen "began the formal process" of getting her marriage to Gavin annulled.
An annulment is, unlike divorce, considered retroactive -- so, religiously speaking, it's as if her marriage to Gavin never happened.
According to the insider, Gwen is doing this "so she can marry Blake and have it be recognized by the church."
"Gwen’s religion has always been extremely important to her," the source affirms. "And Blake is completely supportive of this."
We wish her the best of luck in being granted the annulment that she seeks.
The process is, as we understand it, neither automatic nor guaranteed.
It's no surprise that Gwen and Blake are eager to marry.
Last year, Gwen gushed to Ellen DeGeneres that she thinks about marrying Blake "all the time."
For ages, fans have wondered why the couple appear to be dragging their heels.
This -- Gwen's desire for her new marriage to be sanctioned by the Catholic Church -- could be the explanation that has eluded fans for years.
For some religious traditions, the venue of the wedding is almost as important as the person you're marrying.
Gwen is willing to wait to get things just right.
Of course, many people's first thought when they hear that nuptial plans are on pause is that the couple is in trouble.
Naturally, neither of them could have missed the sudden and shocking news of Miranda Lambert getting married.
In fact, reports say that Blake was blindsided because he was given no courtesy call or head's up.
He found out when the rest of us did.
It's a relief to hear that Blake and Gwen didn't suddenly develop cold feet or second thoughts after hearing about Miranda marrying a hot police officer.
Sometimes, people dredge up new feelings when their ex gets married. It happens.
But it sounds like Gwen and Blake are on track now that they have this annulment process in motion.
Presumably, Gwen is banking on the Catholic Church recognizing that a marriage with cheating is fraudulent in nature and therefore not a real marraige at all.
Historically, there have been famous examples of annulments being denied.
That's why the Anglican Church exists.
We're not suggesting that, if denied an annulment, Gwen will found her own church and start beheading a series of husbands.
But we suspect that even Gwen doesn't know what she'll do if she isn't granted a clean break from Gavin.
Will she marry Blake anyway?
