It's been over a month since Mac Miller died of an overdose at the age of 26.
But the young rapper touched so many lives during his short time on earth that he remains a topic of daily discussion and reflection for his family, his friends, and his legion of devoted fans.
Of course, few were more grief-stricken by the news of Mac's passing than his former girlfriend Ariana Grande.
Though Grande and Miller broke up back in May, Ariana has made it clear that Mac remained an important figure in her life in the months after they separated.
In her latest single, "Thank U, Next," Ariana praises Mac as an "angel" and sings that she wishes she could thank him for their time together.
While Grande may not be able to share her thoughts with Miller in the manner she pleases, she recently received an unexpected communication from the late rapper.
A fan called Ari's attention to one of Mac's final Instagram posts, in which he can be seen answering questions from fans while listening to a song from Grande's latest album, which had not yet been released at the time.
Take a look:
Hey @ArianaGrande here’s a video of @MacMiller listening to R.E.M during his Instagram live from August 9th before it was released. We had to stan the best song from Sweetener! 😭😭😭 👼👼👼 pic.twitter.com/Z4CPu5vPc1— izzy (@arixsolana) November 6, 2018
"Hey @ArianaGrande here’s a video of @MacMiller listening to R.E.M during his Instagram live from August 9th before it was released, the fan wrote.
"We had to stan the best song from Sweetener!"
Clearly moved by this unexpected reminder of Miller's good-natured temperament, Grande responded with heartfelt gratitude.
"His voice and laugh. he is supposed to be here," Ariana wrote.
Though Grande and Miller's breakup was not an amicable one, it's clear that both musicians maintained a profound respect for one another.
And it seems that as the wounds from their breakup healed, their mutual affection only deepened as time went by.
Tragically, we'll never know what might have come of that budding friendship.
