On the morning of September 25th, the world learned that ace Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez had been killed in a boating accident.

Fernandez was just 24 years old.

Yesterday, he was laid to rest in a private ceremony attended by family and friends, including his girlffriend, Maria Arias, who found out she was pregnant just two months before Fernandez’s life was tragically cut short.

Arias made her first public appearance since Fernandez’s death on Wednesday, following his funeral procession as it wound its way through several stops, allowing thousands of fans to pay tribute.

While the ceremony itself was a private affair, Fernandez’s family wanted to ensure that his adoring fans would have an opportunity to pay their last respects.

Witnesses say hundreds waited outside a Cuban restaurant in the Miami suburb of Westchester, chanting "Jose!" as the casket passed by.

Fernandez was eventually laid to rest at La Ermita de la Caridad in Coconut Grove, Florida while his loved ones prayed and wept.

Just weeks before Fernandez’s death, a member of his extended family posted this video of the MLB All-Star finding out that Arias was expecting a girl via a gender reveal cake:

Yesterday, details of Fernandez’s final hours were revealed, and sadly, it seems several members of his inner circle had misgivings about the boating excursion that wound up costing him his life.

It seems Fernandez wanted to blow off some steam after an argument with Arias, and he asked some friends to join him on the water.

Teammates apparently recognized that Fernandez was in an emotionally fragile state, thus making for a dangerous situation.

"That night I told him, ‘Don’t go out,’” Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna told the Miami Herald.

“Everybody knew he was crazy about that boat and loved being out on the water. I told him I couldn’t go out that night because I had the kids and my wife waiting for me."

The best friend of Eddy Rivero, who also killed in the accident, was also concerned about his friend’s safety:

Fernandez’s friend Emilio Macias was killed in the accident, as well.

The Marlins game that was to take place the day Fernandez was killed was canceled out of respect to the late pitching phenom.

"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of José Fernández," read a statement from the team.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time."

When the Marlins eventually took the field again, Fernandez’s friend Dee Gordon hit his first homerun of the season in the first at-bat of the game.

A tearful Gordon later described it as the most emotionally-charged moment of his life.
