If you’re a fan of awkward campaign trail moments, then the 2016 presidential election must be your idea of heaven on Earth.
From Donald Trump talking about his penis on the debate stage to Donald Trump securing the GOP’s nomination, it’s been one deeply uncomfortable laugh riot after another.
But while Donald’s been consistently delivering a non-stop stream of WTF?! moments for well over a year now, today he took a backseat and allowed another throwback ’80s Don to make a roomful of rich white guys nervous:
While he’s no longer promoting boxers, Don King is still a champion of the bloodthirsty and brain-damaged, and he doubled down on his commitment today by taking the stage in Cleveland to endorse Trump’s bid for the White House.
King’s speech was primarily directed at undecided black voters, and at one point, he launched into one of his signature poetic rants.
He began by informing the crowd that he would not use the “n-word” during this portion of the speech…
…but then he did exactly that, because Don King ran out of f–ks to give around the time Mike Tyson looked at Evander Holyfield’s ear, and it turned into a Dorito, like when two cartoon characters are starving on a desert island.
In fairness, it’s a tough situation for Trump and company to react to.
That said, something feels wrong about their responses, which ranged from amused grins to outright guffaws.
Look at Trump, beaming up at Don King like the man is Santa Claus and he promised just promised to deliver the minority vote for Christmas.
We suppose he didn’t handle the situation inappropriately, and we’re not sure there are many politicians who would’ve done much better, but it’s bad timing for Trump to experience a racially-charged moment of awkwardness.
Just yesterday, Trump’s son, Donald Jr., made a wildly offensive comparison between refugees and poisoned Skittles.
(Yes, we’re serious.)
That statement came on the heels of his Donald Jr.’s wildly offensive remarks about the Holocaust.
So all-in-all it wasn’t a great week for a campaign team hoping to lure women and people of color to their side.
We doubt Trump’s reaction to King’s comments will hurt him much…
…but it probably won’t help him much, either.
