The Boston-based season culminated with a drama-filled Top Chef Season 12 Episode 15, with a whole lot of things on the line. Everything, honestly.
A feature in Food & Wine Magazine, an appearance at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, $125,000 cash from Healthy Choice, and … the title of Top Chef.
So would capture the culinary glory, Gregory or Mei?
If you watch Top Chef online, you know the last leg is often the toughest, and right on cue, the shift in location from Boston to Mexico seemed to trip Mei up.
She persevered, though to claim the Top Chef title!
Only the third female winner in 12 seasons of the Bravo show, she earned it after producing an elaborate four-course meal with the help of two sous chefs.
Mei described her winning meal as "reminiscent of who I am as a chef," inspired by her Chinese heritage but also using some local, Mexican ingredients.
Mei served some delicious recipes of octopus; congee with carnitas and a scallion puree; duck with huitlacoche; and strawberry lime curd dessert.
While he Gregory had issues with his soup and its flavors, which he acknowledged, and with his carrot sauce, and his meal just wasn’t as cohesive as Mei’s.
The judges loved components of it, and it was solid all around, but not all courses were perfect, so the cash and the victory went to his rival on this night.
