When video of Ray Rice knocking out his fiancee Janay Palmer leaked online on Monday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell claimed that no league had previously seen the video.
Now it looks as though Goodell may have been lying, as the Associated Press claims the NFL received a DVD of the surveillance footage back in April.
An anonymous law enforcement official told the AP that the league received the DVD no later than April 9.
To prove it, he provided reporters with a 12-second voicemail in which a female voice can be heard acknowledging that the package had arrived and expressing thanks, before saying:
"You're right. It's terrible."
The NFL has released a statement regarding this new development which reads:
"We have no knowledge of this. We are not aware of anyone in our office who possessed or saw the video before it was made public on Monday. We will look into it."
Rice has been cut by the Baltimore Ravens and indefinitely suspended from the NFL. Prior to the release of the attack footage, he had been suspended for a mere 2 games for assaulting the woman who is now his wife.
We'll have more on this story as it develops.
