Let the debate over a fresh judging panel begin anew…

Fox announced this morning that American Idol has been renewed for Season 14, a move most expected the network to make despite the series suffering through its worst ratings in history this year.

The most recent  American Idol performance episode drew a mere 8.65 million viewers and garnered a 1.9 rating in the valued adults 18-49 demographic, while last week’s results show disaster brought in a series-low 6.9 million viewers and 1.5 rating among this same age group.

Season 14 auditions will begin on June 18 in Minnesota and visit 15 cities in all, with San Francisco and Nashville among them.

It’s far too early to speculate on next year’s judges, of course, though most viewers seem to like Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr.

The format simply seems played out and the contestants less than exciting.
