Charles “Bubba” Smith, a former football player best known for his role as Hightower in the Police Academy franchise, passed away today. He was 66.

A bit before 1 p.m. local time, police responded to a call from Smith’s Baldwin Hills home. They arrived and found the actor already dead inside. He is believed to have died of natural causes.

Bubba played defense end for nine seasons with the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders, and Houston Oilers. He earned a Super Bowl ring with the former team, but will forever be remembered for his character of Officer Moses Hightower in six films.
