In response to a petition to deport Piers Morgan from the U.S., a group of Britons who are not huge fans have started a rival petition to keep him in America.
Morgan's spirited anti-gun rants since the Newtown, Connecticut shooting have spurred calls for the CNN host to be sent back to his British homeland.
Of course, while gun control foes would love nothing more, there's no chance. The 1st Amendment clearly protects his right to ... criticize the 2nd Amendment.
Still, the petition has more than 80,000 signatures, which alarmed a group of Britons who have eagerly come to the outspoken TV personality's defense.
Not because they're fans; they just don't want him back in the UK.
Talented though he may be, Piers' tenure as editor of the Daily Mirror left many residents with a less than favorable opinion of him across the Atlantic.
Which leads us to petition #2 on the White House site, reported today by Forbes. In it, concerned residents hereby petition the Obama administration to:
Keep Piers Morgan in the USA
We want to keep Piers Morgan in the USA.
There are two very good reasons for this. Firstly, the first amendment.
Second and the more important point. No one in the UK wants him back.
That about sums it up. Democracy at its finest.
It only has 3,800 signatures so far, but give it time. Also, there are only 60 million Brits and 300 million-plus Americans, so their votes should count five-fold.
Who will win out? Distaste for Piers Morgan among U.S. gun advocates fed up with his liberal views (below), or among a British public long fed up by Mirror gossip?
Only time and the absurd online petition process will tell.
