Joe Paterno Statue: Removed from Penn State Campus

by at . Comments

Following a scathing report by an unbiased investigator, which implicated Joe Paterno directly in a cover-up that allowed Jerry Sandusky to roam free years after he sexually molested a series of young boys, Penn State officially have taken down the statue of the legendary coach from its campus.

University President Rod Erickson said he reached the decision because the statue "has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing" and would be "a recurring wound" to victims of abuse had it remained.

Despite enormous public pressure for the statue to go, the Paterno family remains in the corner of the former head coach, who died in February of lung cancer.

The removal "does not serve the victims of Jerry Sandusky's horrible crimes or help heal the Penn State community," said the family in a statement, taking issue with the report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh being treated as a legal verdict and adding:

"It is not the University's responsibility to defend or protect Joe Paterno. But they at least should have acknowledged that important legal cases are still pending and that the record on Joe Paterno, the board and other key players is far from complete."

What do YOU think? Should Penn State have taken down the statue?

All the wrong people were punished for this crime. The players had nothing to do with Jerry Sanduskys mess. Joe and Sue pa had nothing to do with it, and joe went through all of the RIGHT steps when he found out. And I would still like to know why all those boys that Sandusky messed with waited sooooo long to come forward about this, could be $$$$$$$$? I think so,and I know I will hear from all the haters about this. BUT WHY SO MANY YEARS HAD TO PASS BEFORE ANYONE CAME FORWARD??? Penn State killed Joe Pa and his poor wife will go soon. I've been a Penn State fan forever. I live in columbus, oh. But the Buckeyes were #2 I said were #2. May you all rot in hell!!

Tx Lana- Sickening article. Too bad he died so soon. Should have been made to answer for this. A reprehensible human being.

His family can burn in hell with him. They are still covering up for him. I have ZERO sympathy for them!! They disgust me. Truly they do.

Anyone thinking Paterno was a saint should read the New York Times article titled - Paterno Won Sweeter Deal Even as Scandal Played Out. He kept quiet because it was all about big money. He made millions.

Joe Paterno did not speak up and protect these kids when he had the chance. He was complicit in the rape of children. How dare his family attempt to speak for the victims now.

Joe did tell his story/ the minute he turned his back.

I am glad they took it down. The Freeh report pretty much laid it out-Paterno had the administration hide it so that the football program wasnt tarnished. His bonus depended on attendance and having a scandal would lower attendance. The way I see it is that anyone who thinks it is wrong to take the statue down can just turn and look the other way-it is what Joe did so it must be right.

My thoughts are on the fence.Joe was never given a chance to tell his story.

Tear down that statue!

I respect other opinions on the statue issue; however, regarding his 'many years of service to the school' - he was a PAID employee. It was not charity work. His flat salary alone was over 1/2 million a year. Nice chunk of change for a coaching job.
