Teresa Scanlan Crowned Miss America 2011
Teresa Scanlan is more than the latest Miss America pageant winner. She's also a maker of history.
The 17-year old from Gering, Nebraska was named the youngest champion of all-time on Saturday night, earning the crown by performing "White Water Chopsticks" on the piano. She was the only contestant to neither sing nor dance.
A graduate of Scottsbluff High School, Scanlan has earned a $50,000 scholarship and will attend Patrick Henry College in the fall.
During her year-long tenure, Teresa said her main focus will be on eating disorders and how they affect her generation. If she can't fulfill her duties - and, really, you never know with beauty queens - the runner-up (Miss Arkansas, Alyse Eady) will take over.

GOD has blessed her and she wants the World to know it. Beauty and Talent, and the love of GOD...she really does have "it all". I hope I live long enough to see you reach your goals in Government, we need people like you running our country.

I wish whoever wrote this article would have taken the time to do sufficient research. While Ms. Scanlan is one of the youngest winners, there have been two winners even younger. The first was Margaret Gormon in the pageant's first year, 1921. She won at the age of 15. The other, also 15, was Bette Cooper in 1937. It is very disappointing to read an article by someone who doesn't do their job correctly.

Congratulations, Teresa... it's super to see a committed Christian achieve such prominence in a world that has lost its moral bearings. Keep your testimony humble and holy. Young people desperately need a roll model who is not afraid to stand for her Christian convictions. God bless you, Teresa. May your days as Miss America leave a legacy that will count for eternity.

Ms. Scanlan appears to be a dedicated, hardworking young woman and deserves the honor as much as anyone I suppose. But “Miss America” should go the same way as horse buggies, slavery and leaching patients in medicine. The fact that it awards scholarships only makes it slightly less offensive. Maybe I should have my own “scholarship competition” where I get to ogle young woman as 30% of their score. The fact that I gave scholarships doesn’t get away from the fact that a significant part of the award is based on appearance and looks, awarding women already blessed in this category even though all the studies show there is already significant prejudice/discrimination based on “lookism” and people who don’t “measure up.” If anyone was deserving of scholarships relating to appearance, its folks who DON’T look like these beautiful young women.
The “fitness” category doesn’t measure true physical fitness, only the judges ogling these women in swimsuits. La
