Having a spat in the car, even a small one, is not a great way to build up to meeting your future mother-in-law for the first time in many years. Nikki knows this. The vibes are off. As they approach, though, she and Justin are no longer arguing about her looks or anything else.
A warm welcome!
Justin’s stepfather introduces himself, while Nikki receives a very warm embrace from Justin’s mom. This is a very encouraging start.
She’s thinking of her son
To the camera, she explains how she remembers how the breakup the first time utterly devastated Justin. Her biggest worry right now is that Justin might suffer another heartbreak. That concern isn’t going to stop her from being polite and welcoming.
Justin’s mom has something to show Nikki
After showing some of Justin’s baby picture, she shows Nikki some other throwbacks. She kept photo after photo from their first engagement, even after the breakup. This means after Nikki and Justin split and also after she learned that Nikki is transgender. That’s honestly a huge deal. There are ostensibly forward-thinking parents in ostensibly forward-thinking countries who would try to erase all memory of their child’s trans fiancee if they could. This is heartwarming.
Time for a reality check
Nikki notes that Justin’s K-1 visa is about four months out — at least, that it should be. We all know that there are delays. She wants to know how his mom feels about Justin’s imminent departure. Obviously, she’s going to miss her son immensely. But she’s still rooting for him. To the camera, Justin notes that his mother’s embrace of Nikki is the result of the effort that he’s put in on his side. He says that he hopes that Nikki sees that.
This is very wise
Justin’s mom also explains, very sweetly, that she knows that times change. Yes, Nikki is transgender. She’s also the woman that Justin loves. It’s up to him to choose his own path to happiness. It is, as we said, incredibly sweet.
