Mackenzie McKee has experienced all the downsides of Teen Mom fame with few of the benefits.
She's been living in the public eye and has often found herself at the center of heated controversies -- but all the while, she wasn't receiving a paycheck from MTV.
That's soon to change, as it was revealed on Monday that Mackenzie will be joining the cast of Teen Mom OG.
The news has received a mixed response from fans, with many applauding the Teen Mom 3 alum for finally making her way back on TV full-time -- and others wishing she'd remained out of the spotlight.
As for McKee's TMOG colleagues -- well, it seems she'll have to work hard to win them over.
Here's everything we know about the situation thus far:
It's official -- Mackenzie McKee is once again a member of the Teen Mom family.
Of course, Mackenzie is not totally inexperienced when it comes to reality TV stardom. Like Briana DeJesus, she got her start on the short-lived Teen Mom 3.
Fighting For Her Spot
For several years, every time there's been a cast shake-up, McKee's name has been bandied about as a possible replacement. But she always came up empty-handed -- until now.
An Odd Arrangement
In an unexpected twist, however, McKee will not be appearing on the show at the start of its upcoming season, which premieres on June 10.
A Late Start
“Mackenzie has been filming,” a source told Radar Online. “She will appear in a few episodes towards the end of the season.”
And it seems McKee is not yet guaranteed a full-time spot on the show.
Producers described Mackenzie's first episodes as a “trial period” designed to determine if she will “continue as an original girl.”
Bye to Bristol
Mackenzie will be replacing Bristol Palin, who lasted just one season on the show.
Bristol was paid more than any of the other moms, and she failed to deliver on the ratings boon that producers were expecting.
Won't Be Fooled Again
It's likely for that reason that McKee will start out on a trial basis -- and probably won't be paid much for her initial episodes.
Better Than Nothing
But after years of waiting in the wings for a call from MTV, we're sure Mackenzie is happy to receive any sort of paycheck from the network.
A Courageous Family
Mackenzie's mother has been battling cancer for quite some time, and the family's openness and bravery has won them millions of fans on social media.
But judging from the reaction online, lots of folks aren't so thrilled with the addition of Mackenzie to the Teen Mom OG cast.
Gone to the Dogs?
The mother of four has been a controversial figure for quite some time, with many complaining about what appears to be her abusive treatment of animals.
Yeah, Not Funny...
Earlier this year, McKee shared a "humorous" story in which she revealed that her children killed a ferret while playing with it in a pet store.
Shortly thereafter, Mackenzie was accused of abusing and abandoning her own pet dog.
Not a Great Start
With all that in her recent past, Mackenzie might have a hard time winning fans among Teen Mom OG viewers. And the Moms themselves don't seem too thrilled about the prospect of welcoming a newcomer.
"No, we’re good.” Maci Bookout said when asked in a recent group interview if she wants MTV to replace Bristol.
Bad News, Y'all
“No new friends," Maci Bookout echoed. “No, I’m good with just four," said Catelynn Lowell.
Thoughts From Kail
Meanwhile, Teen Mom 2 star Kailyn Lowry is pissed about today's announcement for a different reason.
Apparently, Kail had hoped to discuss the casting news on her Coffee Convos podcast, but she was misled by her MTV bosses.
Kail took to Twitter to openly accuse her bosses of lying to her. As you can see, she's none too thrilled at the moment.
A Hard Road Ahead
Needless to say, Mackenzie has many hurdles to clear if she hopes to become an accepted member of the Teen Mom family.
Up to the Challenge
But with all she's been through in her young life, we're sure Mackenzie is more than capable of toughing it out.
More to Come...
We'll bring you further updates on this developing story as more information becomes available.
And Now That Information is Available!
Our friends at The Ashley
have more intel on what we can expect.
Yes, McKee Will Be on the Show, But...
... “She is not going to be on the show until the last few episodes, most likely not until the third-to-last or so of the season," a source tells this website.
“This has been kept totally on the down-low," The Ashley continues. "Most of the producers and crew who weren’t working directly with Mackenzie didn’t even know it was happening.”
How Many Episodes Will She Actually Appear In?
Unclear right now, but sources tell The Ashley McKee will be a "guest star."
As for Her Storyline?
We hear that a majority of her scenes will be about her mother, Angie Douthit, and this parent's battle with cancer.
Here is a Photo of Angie
“Once they air the episodes with Mackenzie, they will analyze how viewers take to her and how well she fits in with the show," The Ashley continues, hinting that McKee could still be made a regular down the line.
There May Therefore Be Hope After All
"If she fits, they will make her an official cast member for ‘OG’ for the ‘B’ part of this season,” the source says. “At least, that’s what [the crew] has been told."
A Feud Has Already Been Ignited
“If it’s not broke don’t fix it! #TeenMomOG #JustSaying," Catelynn Lowell Tweeted after this news went public, implying that she was pissed about the addition.
Or Has It?
"It has NOTHING to do with Mackenzie at all! It’s with the ppl that don’t explain what’s happening. I welcome anyone just think MTV would tell us not find out online," Lowell later clarified.
When Will We First See McKee on Air?
Also unclear. But Teen Mom OG returns with new episodes on June 10!
