As you've most likely heard by now, Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt yesterday after two years of marriage and more than a decade together as a couple.
The move took many by surprise, including Pitt himself, who was reportedly blindsided by the filing.
According to documents obtained by TMZ, the couple had been separated, but only briefly, with Jolie moving out of the home they shared on September 15.
Rumors about the couple parting ways had been circulating for years, but most of them turned out to be baseless tabloid chatter.
In fact, the Jolie-Pitt split came as such a surprise that even longtime friend of the couple George Clooney was visibly caught off guard by the news:
But as is always the case with this sort of thing, there are plenty who claim that they saw it coming.
And some in the media are claiming the signs were right there in front of us all along.
Despite being reported as fact by several news outlets, it now looks as though the rumors of Pitt cheating on Jolie with Marion Cotillard were bogus.
But just because there was no infidelity, that doesn't mean the marriage wasn't showing signs of strain in other ways.
One insider tells People magazine that A-list couple has "definitely spent more time apart this year," adding that they were seldom seen at their Miraval estate in the South of France at the same time.
"Brad has been coming to Miraval every few weeks in season this year," says the source.
"He has been filming in Europe and he's come in a couple of times, for a couple of days."
It seems, however, that Jolie was not with him on any of those occasions.
The last time the couple was spotted together was in July in Los Angeles.
But sources say they were already experiencing problems then, and the outing was reportedly for the benefit of daughter Shiloh who joined them at Jamba Juice on the day in question.
The insider who spoke with People says that some of those who knew the couple best believed Pitt and Jolie to be headed for divorce for at least the past year.
The claim jibes with earlier reports that the actors argued over Pitt's drug use while they were filming By the Sea together in the fall of 2015.
Jolie wrote and directed the project and frequently brought her kids to the set, and she was reportedly outraged by Pitt's tendency to show up to work hungover and disheveled.
We'll have further updates on this story as more information becomes available.
