The 47-year old actress and transgender icon passed away from a heart attack, according to a new E! News report.

The typically reliable outlet states that it has obtained Arquette’s death certificate, which list heart attack as the immediate cause of her passing.

But there does appear to be more to her death than this unfortunate incident.

The document goes on to reveal that the star suffered from a bacterial infection of the heart three weeks prior to her cardiac arrest on September 11.

Moreover, the certificate confirms a rumor that started to spread not long after Arquette passed away: she had living with HIV for 29 years; this illness was noted as an underlying cause of death.

Arquette was best known to movie fans for memorable roles in films such as Pulp Fiction and The Wedding Singer.

She was the sister of actors David, Patricia and Rosanna Arquette, all of whom paid tribute to their sibling after she died.

Her brother, Richmond, confirmed his sister’s passing the day it happened.

"Our brother Robert, who became our brother Alexis, who became our sister Alexis, passed this morning September 11 at 12:32 a.m.," he wrote on Facebook, adding:

"He was surrounded by all of his brothers and sisters, and one of his nieces and several other loved ones…As per his wishes, we cheered at the moment that he transitioned to another dimension."

A day after Alexis’ passing, an ex-lover named Robert Dupont told Radar online that Arquette had been suffering from HIV and an "inoperable tumor."

He added that Arquette had been placed in an induced coma before she died, which does seem plausible.

Family members knew the end was near, Richmond wrote on Facebook:

"As per his wishes, we cheered at the moment that he transitioned to another dimension."

Richmond also said Alexis passed away to the music of David Bowie; the single "Starman," to be specific.

Hours after news broke of Alexis leaving this world, David Arquette Tweeted a tribute and expressed gratitude for the love his loved one had received from fans.

"Thank you all for your love and kind words about Alexis," the actor wrote on social media. "My hero for eternity.

As you can see below, many people in Hollywood were touched by Alexis Arquette’s life and death:

Sister Patricia Arquette later Tweeted: "To My first best friend – Cosmic Dancer. Breaking through the veil singing StarMan."

And Courteney Cox, who was married to David Arquette from 1999 to 2013, expressed her condolences with a heartfelt message of her own online:

"My heart goes out to anyone who was lucky enough to know Alexis. We will love and miss you forever."

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family would like fans to send donations to organizations that support the LGBTQ community in honor of Alexis Arquette and all she believed in.

May she rest in peace.
