One of the most legendary voices in the history of rock music has been silenced.
Iconic recording artist David Bowie passed away on Monday at the age of 69.
According to his Facebook page, Bowie had been fighting cancer.
The official statement from his family reads as follows:
"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer."
"While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief."
Bowie's son, film director Duncan Jones, confirmed the news moments ago with a tweet reading, "Very sorry and sad to say it's true."
"I'll be offline for a while. Love to all."
Bowie's influence on rock and roll and contemporary pop culture over the course of nearly five decades cannot be overstated.
In addition to recording such classic albums as The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, The Man Who Sold the World, and Aladdin Sane, Bowie became a prominent figure in the worlds of film and fashion during his decades in the spotlight.
Social media sites have been flooded with tributes to Bowie in the brief time since news of his death was made public.
