Ricky Gervais is known to cross lines with his humor.
But the comedian grew unusually serious this week, calling out a hunter he believed crossed a line with a recent Facebook photo.
It was posted on Monday by Eye of the Hunter co-host Rebecca Francis - and it features her lying alongside a dead giraffe, a giant smile plastered across her face.
Asked Gervais upon seeing the disturbing image:
"What must've happened to you in your life to make you want to kill a beautiful animal & then lie next to it smiling?"
In response to Gervais (and subsequent threats she received), Francis released a statement on HuntingLife.com that explained this was a mercy kill.
She said she was in Africa five years ago when a "unique circumstance" was presented to her.
"They showed me this beautiful old bull giraffe that was wandering all alone. He had been kicked out of the herd by a younger and stronger bull," Francis wrote.
"He was past his breeding years and very close to death. They asked me if I would preserve this giraffe by providing all the locals with food and other means of survival. He was inevitably going to die soon and he could either be wasted or utilized by the local people."
Francis went on to say she she has no regrets over her actions because she "chose to honor [the animal's] life by providing others with his uses," adding:
"Once he was down there were people waiting to take his meat. They also took his tail to make jewelry, his bones to make other things, and did not waste a single part of him. I am grateful to be a part of something so good."
A similar outcry broke out last summer after Facebook received so many complaints over Kendall Jones' hunting photos that it temporarily took them down.
A follower of Gervais, meanwhile, sent the star a different picture of Francis, one that features her once again smiling over a kill... this time spreading open the mouth of a dead lion.
Quipped Gervais in response: "she probably killed this one to feed the poor locals too ;)."
What do you think of this unexpected feud? Should Gervais mind his own business? Should hunters take a little less satisfaction in their corpses?
