It's a sentence we never though we'd write, but here goes:
Viewers will bear witness to Derek Shepherd's funeral on Grey's Anatomy Season 11 Episode 22.
Indeed, as anyone with an Internet connection knows by now, Shonda Rhimes actually went there on Thursday night. She actually killed off Patrick Dempsey's beloved brain surgeon.
The actor had made it clear for some time that he was ready to move on from the show, with an earlier report claiming Dempsey's diva-like behavior led to his suspension and then, eventually, his removal.
How will the series move on without its secondary lead character?
We'll begin to find out next Thursday night, as ABC airs a two-hour special built around Meredith breaking the sad news to everyone and then our favorite doctors gathering for a funeral.
Check out the teaser above for a glance ahead and be sure to bring a box of tissues to the living room with you on April 30.
Said Rhimes after last night's episode aired:
"Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character - for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our McDreamy.
"Patrick Dempsey’s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example - happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true - of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all.
"Now, Meredith and the entire Grey’s Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life.
"The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning."
Now is the time to watch Grey's Anatomy online in order to bid farewell to Dr. Derek Shepherd:
