McDreamy's reign on Grey's Anatomy may soon be coming to an end, according to new reports that suggest Patrick Dempsey is bolting the ABC medical drama.
Those who watch Grey's Anatomy online know that Dempsey's character Derek Shepherd has been one of the anchors of the show since its inception.
However, that was 10 years ago, an eternity in today's TV landscape, and he's spoken openly about his desire to move on several times in the past.
Dempsey discussed his Grey's future, or lack thereof, last fall, telling the Portland Press Herald in November that he was leaving the show "very soon."
"I do want to act [after Grey's], but I might take a break and go race and travel first. I haven’t found a piece of material I want to do yet," the actor said.
Moreover, a show insider says he has been "sidelined" on Grey's since last year thanks to his "diva" behavior and feud with creator Shonda Rhimes:
"Patrick has been acting like a diva and has clashed with Shonda. She suspended him for a while, and the word on set is that he isn’t coming back full time."
"Given all the past problems with Katherine Heigl and Isaiah Washington," the insider adds, "there is little tolerance [left] for troublesome talent."
Through his rep, the 49-year-old star denies the Page Six report indicating his imminent exit, but his future on the series is far from certain at best.
In the most recent episode, April 16's "One Flight Down," Derek missed a meeting with the president in D.C. and failed to check in with wife Meredith.
When she finally decided to call the cops, a police car pulled up to her driveway. What will happen tomorrow on Grey's Anatomy Season 11 Episode 21?
Only time will tell, but if he's been written off the show, it would not be the first major life change this year for Patrick, who is divorcing Jillian Fink.
The couple had been married 15 years and have three children together; Patrick and Jillian, a makeup artist, announced their divorce earlier this year.
