John Travolta made have creepily rubbed Idina Manzel's face and unabashedly groped Scarlett Johansson at the Oscars last night, but another A-List actor still managed to upstage Travolta in the Inappropriate Department.
On stage to announce Best Picture, Sean Penn stopped for a moment prior to revealing the winner in order to make a failed joke about director Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Mexican immigration status.
“Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?" Penn quipped.
The reference was immediately met on social media by cries of racism.
“Absolutely horrible green card comment from Sean Penn. The struggles people endure for immigration justice are not punchlines,” wrote one Twitter user.
Another shot back, referencing Penn's notable humanitarian efforts:
"That Green Card quip was microcosmic of everything everyone hates about privileged folk who adopt the struggles of underprivileged folk."
Penn, who recently got engaged to Charlize Theron, has become nearly as well known for his work in rebuilding Haiti as he is for his roles on the big screen.
He may need to rebuild something else after this unnecessary quip.
Fusion's Mariana Atencio and Entertainment Weekly's Nina Terrero pointed out how the comment encouraged Latino stereotypes because none of the British actors in attendance were questioned about their immigration status.
"BTW, I'm still waiting for the green card jokes on Eddie Redmayne or any of the other Brits in attendance at tonight's #Oscars," Terrero wrote.
Saved By the Bell cast alum and proud Mexican-American Mario Lopez seemed especially bothered by the comment, Tweeting soon after it aired:
Sean Penn talking about a Mexican dude to a room full of British & Australian people… great job Sean Penn. Ruining a fantastic moment with a green card "joke." #Tacky
We'd have to agree.
To make everyone feel a little better about the 2015 Academy Awards, though, let's take a look back at Neil Patrick Harris being awesome, shall we?
