Unlike past seasons of American Horror Story, the opening few episodes of Freak Show are slowly rolling out new characters bit by bit.

It’s been a very effective strategy thus far, with each episode helping us get to know new members of the carnival and/or those with whom they’ll be clashing.

On American Horror Story Season 4 Episode 3, that meant the introduction of Emma Roberts as Esmeralda, a pretend fortune teller who is working a con (along with Denis O’Hare’s character) in order to infiltrate the Freak Show and find someone/something to bring back to a museum for big bucks.

She won over Elsa by claiming some mystery man was on the way to revive her career and she won over Jimmy by, well, being very pretty.

We also met Edward Mordrake on this episode of American Horror Story.

Portrayed by Wes Bentley, this mythical creature is no myth. He’s cursed with a tiny head on the back of his regular head, one that whispers to him to do some very bad things.

Every Halloween, if a carnival dares to put on a show, he rises and takes at least one performer back to the land of the dead with him. In this case, the rehearsal of Elsa (she’s preparing to be a star again, remember) brought Mordrake down to Jupiter.

But he went into the tent of Ethel and it seemed very much as if he was going to kill her.

She was ready for it, too, because we learned earlier than Ethel has cirrhosis of the liver. She has six months to a year to live, an illness she only told Dell about (we also learned that he has some erectile dysfunction issues… we also saw a flashback in which Dell made Ethel give birth in front of a crowd of people. He’s also done all he can to exploit her and Jimmy.)

Mordrake, however, spared Ethel’s life. The question now becomes: whose will he take on American Horror Story Season 4 Episode 4 next Wednesday?

Elsewhere, Dot is really letting her talent get to her head. She demanded a raise from Elsa and she told Bette that she wants to have surgery that separates them someday, even if it means one dies.

Finally, the killer clown kidnapped another young boy, while Dandy made himself a killer clown outfit and we ended the hour with him on the clown’s bus when the clown arrived.

Will he be the next victim? Or, as he desires, will Dandy become his protege?
