Tom Brokaw, one of the most respected journalists on television and the former anchor of the NBC Nightly News, has been diagnosed with cancer.

The 74-year-old – who works as a NBC News Special Correspondent – revealed his health issues in a note today, insisting that physicians are encouraged with his medical treatment to date.

“With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come,” Brokaw said via statement. “I remain the luckiest guy I know.”

To be specific, Brokaw was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (a cancer that affects cells in the bone marrow) in August at the Mayo Clinic.

He has has continued to work since then on NBC News projects and has made appearances on the Today show, Nightly News With Brian Williams and Meet the Press.

“I am very grateful for the interest in my condition but I also hope everyone understands I wish to keep this a private matter,” Brokaw concluded.
