With the American Idol Season 12 premiere just one week away, Mariah Carey was featured last night on ABC’s Nightline.

Asked by Barbara Walters about the feud with Nicki Minaj and whether she actually feared for her life, Carey confirmed the initial rumor.

“It felt like an unsafe work environment,” Carey said of Minaj supposedly saying she would “shoot that bitch” in reference to Mariah.

“Anytime anybody’s reeling threats at somebody, it’s not appropriate. I’m a professional. I’m not used to that type of environment.”

Mariah also said she really did hire extra security in response to the incident because she’s not taking “any chances” with one-year old twins at home.

But she also believes the past can remain in the past – and that the future of American Idol is bright with her and Minaj on board.

“For all the drama, I hope it helps the show,” Carey said. “I think it’s a classic, classy show and it didn’t need this.

“For me, ultimately, this is about the kids, the contestants. I’ve been blessed to live my dream more than half my life, so I want help give that back to someone else.”

American Idol Season 12 premieres over two nights next week, beginning on January 16.
