Members of the Whedonverse, unite!

Marvel announced yesterday that Joss Whedon would, indeed, return to write and direct a sequel to The Avengers, the 2012 blockbuster that has grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide.

He has also signed a deal to develop some kind of television showed based on these characters, though details behind that project are sketchy at best.

Announced Marvel in a statement:

“Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”

What will The Avengers 2 deliver? It’s far too early to know.

The studio already has a slate of comic book-based movie on the horizon, including: Iron Man 3 (scheduled for May 3, 2013), Thor: The Dark World (Nov. 8, 2013), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 4, 2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy (Aug. 1, 2014).
