Some causes are worth fighting for. If you’re Nicole Richie, that cause is simply eating.

For Pierce Brosnan and other celebrities, however, plans for a liquefied natural gas plant off the coast of Malibu are worth protesting against. The facility is being shopped around by Australian-based BHP Billiton, one of the world’s largest energy companies.

In a time during which Janet Jackson’s boobs caused more of an uproar than a faulty war in Iraq, it’s nice to see famous people pull together for something like this.

“This LNG project poses significant and potentially irreversible negative impacts to our coast, our environment and to the health and safety of our families,” Brosnan said.

And he’s taken the fight to the Internet!

A post on the actor’s website urging Malibu residents to join the protest is signed by stars such as Tom Hanks, Charlize Theron, Darryl Hannah, Cindy Crawford, Olivia Newton John, Jamie Lee Curtis, Cher and Barbra Streisand.

A rep at BHP Billiton couldn’t defend his work very well to TMZ.

“If you are against fossil fuels, you won’t like our project. I can’t argue with that. But LNG is a better fossil fuel,” he said. “Natural gas is the cleanest, and until all of us can drive our cars and power our homes with wind, solar, hydro or other renewables – for the millions of people in Los Angeles and California, Cabrillo Port is a cleaner, safer solution.”

Lindsay Lohan didn’t have a clue what this guy was talking about. She knows nothing about being clean or safe.
