Roland Martin on Tracy Morgan Apology: Unnecessary!

Following his vicious rant against gay people during a stand-up set in Nashville, Tracy Morgan issued an apology and admitted he crossed a line with his violent word choice.

Case closed, right? Not for CNN contributor Roland Martin.

In a blog entry, the journalist wondered by Morgan has to issue a mea culp "for saying nasty, vicious and vile things during a stand-up routine."

"Isn't that par for the course of a comedian?" Martin wrote. "There isn't enough space on the Internet to chronicle the number of times a comedian has said nasty and vile things. Some of it leading the audience to fall out laughing or sometimes, or as in the case of Morgan, walk out in protest."

But didn't Martin jump all over Michael Richards in 2006, following that actor's racist diatribe?

Yes. But here's the difference, Martin writes:

"I said then and now that Richards directly attacked an audience member and his use of the N-word had nothing to do with his routine. If it was in the context of a routine, it would not have been received the same."

We'll grant that difference. But we'll also say this: what kind of routine was Morgan doing? From all reports, there were no punchlines or jokes of any kind. It was simply five minutes of gay bashing.

Here's a funny joke: "If I were blind and found out my adopted son was black, I'd stab him to death." Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. Watch all the porch monkeys come to my defense. NOT!

As a bisexual man I'll say that I love comedy and i love free speech. Either you believe in free speech or you don't. It was part of tracy's act and Tracy has always pushed the edge. You can't just believe in free speech and dark humor when it doesnt offend you. In the context of a comedy show where the comedian is going for the joke and going for shock value all this apology crap is just too much for me. Now Morgan has to be the spokesperson for LGBT group that wants use him to get their political point across. And I'd be very interested in getting a transcript of the entire show tp hear what parts the people that were offended by laughed at. I'm sure they laughed at jokes that would offend other people but its hypocritical to get upset when the joke hits too close to home for you

so Roland Martin only thinks whites should have to apologize? I don't agree with what Michael Richards said but Tracy's was just as demeaning & wrong. To me wrong is wrong no matter what color, race or sexual orientation.

tracy nesto shut the hell up for the child s come and get his kids you don't say that about your kids you be pround no matter what they do
