Jenelle Evans and Nathan Griffith have not gotten along for a very, very long time.
There have been times that they've tolerated each other, but for the most part, their relationship hasn't been pretty.
And now that they're involved in a huge, nasty custody battle, you'd think it would be even worse, right?
But it turns out that Nathan is actually being ... kind of sweet?
This whole thing is super weird and oddly heartwarming, so let's just get into it ...
What a History
Can you remember a time when Jenelle and Nathan got along well? Even when they were dating?
Like, yeah, they felt confident enough in their relationship to have a baby and get engaged, but there were some super nasty fights in there.
Fights so bad they ended in visits from the police.
Thank Goodness (Maybe)
Eventually they broke up, of course, and a month later Jenelle was with David, who made it extremely clear straight from the beginning that he absolutely despised Nathan.
He insisted that he be the one to talk to Nathan about anything involving Kaiser, not Jenelle, and he really just set the stage for a bad time there.
So considering all of that, it's no surprise that they're having such a bad time right now.
We all know this part so well by now, but we still need to mention it -- last month, Jenelle's family went all to hell after David killed their dog, MTV fired her, and CPS took their kids away.
Nathan had been fighting for full custody of Kaiser anyway, but he has him full-time now as Jenelle and David put in work to prove (or disprove) that they're capable of being decent parents.
Meanwhile, Maryssa is with her grandmother and Ensley is with her other big brother, Jace, at Barbara's house.
That means that Jenelle and David are home alone with no one to look after but themselves, and how scary is that?
Almost as scary as the fact that they seem to have major problems with Barbara and Nathan -- the people who "took" their kids from them.
(Side note: we haven't seen or heard anything about them interacting with Maryssa's grandmother at all, which probably has something to do with the reports that they really aren't all that interested in getting back custody of her.)
Earlier this week, everyone was in court, and quite a bit of drama happened out in the parking lot -- Jenelle and David are just classy like that.
Jenelle took Ensley as Barbara was taking her off for a lunch break -- something that was against the rules, as she's only allowed to see the kids with CPS supervision.
Come On, Jenelle
Jenelle told Barbara that if she had a problem with it, she could go inside the courthouse and find an officer. With everything else that happened, that statement kind of got glossed over, but it's pretty gross, right? She admitted she knew she was doing something wrong, and it also meant that she'd be willing to have a police officer take Ensley away from her instead of just being cool and let the kid go get lunch.
Jenelle ended up walking Ensley back to Barbara's car, and they were snippy with each other the whole way. Barbara said that Jenelle was only acting sweet for the camera, Jenelle said that she'd called CPS on Barbara for letting her troubled son watch Ensley while she took a shower.
Jenelle yelled at her to stop arguing in front of Ensley, which is just so rich, and then she left Ensley screaming in the car by herself so she could fuss at her mom some more. She didn't even say goodbye.
Of Course There Was
And if that wasn't enough drama for one court day, there was another incident later, this one involving Nathan and David.
This time, Jenelle and David were driving off when they saw Nathan speaking with a photographer, so David leaned out the window and said "What are you hanging out with the paparazzi for?"
Nathan told him that they were just talking, and David hit back with "Keep talking, that's all you ever do."
Nathan laughed and suggested that David just ask the photographer what they were talking about, and instead, David flipped him off as Jenelle drove away.
After that, Nathan made a comment about getting a restraining order against David, which would make sense. It would probably be smart for everyone involved in this mess to get one, but especially Nathan and Barbara.
But even though Nathan has been behaving so well throughout this whole thing, and even though he obviously did nothing wrong in that interaction with David, it seems like he still tried to be the better person.
Which, when you're dealing with Jenelle and David, can't be that hard.
Good for Him
According to a new report from TMZ, Nathan got in touch with Jenelle on Tuesday evening to clear the air.
Trying to Get Along
The site claims that Nathan "wasn't happy with how things were left," so he texted her to clarify that he really wasn't doing anything sinister in talking to the paparazzi, he was just chatting.
That definitely makes sense -- it's been months since Nathan has said anything even remotely negative about Jenelle or David. He's said that he's working on keeping things private and putting his energy into getting custody, so it would be weird for him to be running his mouth to the media now, when he could be so close to finally getting Kaiser for good.
But TMZ's sources say that Jenelle didn't believe him, and that she "thinks Nathan was looking for dirt on her and David's child custody case."
But why would Nathan be trying to get information from a photographer that happened to be hanging outside the courthouse when police and CPS pretty much have everything covered? If there was enough reason for an emergency removal of the kids, then Nathan doesn't need to be chatting up the media.
It just doesn't make sense, and apparently Nathan agreed -- TMZ added that "he thinks Jenelle and David need to drop their us versus the world attitude, and he told them so."
Some Good Advice
But there's no hope whatsoever of Jenelle taking Nathan's advice, even though it's clear he really is trying his best to be civil.
He even bought a necklace for Kaiser to give to Jenelle during one of his few visits with her, and if that's not a sign that he's matured, then who knows what is.
Along with the selfie of her in the necklace, she added a picture of it still in the box. For her caption, she wrote "It’s the little things in life. With everything that has been going on lately, I’ve come to realize a child’s love for their mother will never fade. No distance, not time, no person can change that special love. This necklace was given to me by my little bubba, Kaiser. He told me he wanted mommy to 'match his'. My children are the sweetest and the best."
Nathan's girlfriend, Ashley, explained how it happened on Twitter, writing "Kaiser has been asking for a necklace 'like daddy’s' for months . Nate bought him one & a few weeks later he said he wanted to get his mommy one to match. So nate bought it & kai gave it to her. Very sweet."
Man Oh Man
And isn't that just the sweetest thing you've ever heard?
All of this goes to show that despite everything, including the alleged horrors tha Kaiser has faced in Jenelle's care, Nathan is treating her with respect and kindness for the sake of their son.
