On 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After? Season 7, Episode 5, some of the cast reached difficult compromises.
But Angela never compromises. She is planning to confront Michael and search his phone.
And the trip will be a total surprise. It’s not a visit; it’s an ambush.
Liz admits that Big Ed is more controlling than her friends realize. We are also subjected to their roleplay.
Elizabeth finds out that her sisters are caving against their toxic brother instead of presenting a united front. She and Andrei have a choice to make.
After an “adventurous” night in their hotel room, Sumit gets Jenny to participate in something new.
Striking a very different tone, Yara and Jovi are processing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Yara wants to see family — and to help them flee the war zone.
Finally, Kimberly and Usman are still reeling from their fight. He’s afraid to introduce her to his family if she’s acting like this. She is just tired of the lies.
Angela Deem and Michael Ilesanmi
Angela is packing her bags to the point of excess. She apparently has three outfits for every day of her upcoming trip. Her plan is to see Michael in person for the first time in two years. Just after they married, her mother’s health took a downward turn and she returned to the US. That erstwhile administration’s immigration policies and then COVID-19 both delayed Michael’s marital visa considerably.
Angela’s friend Rene is going with her
It turns out that Angela and Rene have a lot in common. Specifically, Angela smelled cigarette smoke on her in an airport one time, recognized a kindred spirit, and the two went into an airport bathroom to smoke. They should both be on Do Not Fly lists for that, but instead they forged a friendship. Angela alienated the friend whom she invited on the show before, so Rene is there to give her someone to talk to on her trip — and to try to make viewers think that she’s likable.
Angela wants to look sexy for Michael
She has lost a lot of weight since her last visit to Nigeria. Even if Michael has not complimented her figure over the phone, she hopes to stun him in person. Yes, she is packing what we will loosely refer to as “sexy” apparel.
Michael is still on Instagram
According to her, he continues to taunt her, refusing to take down his posts and his Instagram unless she sends him $5,000. They are both deeply bizarre people and their marriage is toxic. Even with Michael’s behavior, however, it would be too far to say that he “deserves” Angela’s treatment of him. To be clear, no one deserves the emotional and verbal abuse that she inflicts.
Oh, and there’s one more thing
Angela’s trip to Nigeria is a surprise. Michael does not know that she is coming. Her plan is to search his phone herself, like many toxic abusive partners before her, and she doesn’t want him to have time to delete anything. Very healthy marriage here.
The morning of the flight
Angela gets emotional over how Michael has been treating her. She may not be a good wife or a good person, but we can appreciate that her sadness is genuine. At the same time, however, she notes that she has been researching Nigerian law (sure) and anything of Michael’s belongs to her, as his wife, legally. Basically, she plan to run amok and do whatever she wants, like always.
Angela boards her flight
She is clearly feeling nervous, but Michael is the one who should feel afraid.
Ed Brown and Liz Woods
Liz and her friend Alex have been working out together, which Liz reveals is the only time that Ed gives her space. Other times, she explains, he will constantly interrogate her about her whereabouts or demand that she come home. She acknowledges that he acts in a controlling way because of his insecurities.
Ed “supports” her working out
He has, she admits, been pressuring her to lose weight without directly saying it. Liz acknowledges that bringing up photos of her in the past is hurtful and making her feel insecure.
“It sounds really controlling to me”
Alex points out that what he wants from her is downright unhealthy, she affirms that Liz is beautiful, and Alex is downright sickened by how Ed is treating her. It is also unfair, she notes, that Ed makes his insecurities Liz’s problem.
Moving on to Ed
Big Ed is still salty about Liz telling him that he was trying to show off to Alex during the photoshoot. Specifically, he calls his fiancee a “baby sissy waa-waa.” It’s unbecoming, but we’ve come to expect this level of immaturity and disrespect from the recurring franchise villain.
Ed’s mom is not taking his calls
He has sent out save-the-dates for his wedding to Liz, but neither of their families approve of them making this toxic relationship more formal. Admittedly, Ed’s side of things think that Liz is the bad guy somehow, which probably says more about what Ed says about her than it does about Liz herself.
No thank you, please
Ed and Liz subject viewers to their roleplay, where Ed will come by and say the worst pickup lines on the planet and Liz will act like it’s somehow charming. Baffling. Wish that we could unsee it.
Then they get serious
Ed and Liz discuss his family. His mom and his daughter are important to him and he hopes that they will come to the wedding. Liz wants them to be there for him, but she is also leery of potential drama that they might cause at the nuptials.
Also, Ed overestimates how much he has improved
He talks about how he listens more to Liz, but she does have to remind him that he has a ways to go. Seriously, they are still reeling from his antics during the photoshoot of Alex, but Ed is ready to declare “Mission Accomplished” and pat himself on the back.
Elizabeth Potthast and Andrei Castravet
Libby meets up with her sisters, Becky and Jenn, at the latter’s daughter’s dance class. There, the three moms talk about the state of things — and the upcoming birthday of their homophobic mom (we did not forget), Pamela.
What happened to solidarity?
Libby learns that her sisters are planning to attend Pamela’s birthday party, even though Charlie will be in attendance. Just last year, he attacked Andrei on camera. The sisters asked him to get help for his drinking and behavioral issues before they would hang out with him again, but Charlie has refused.
What changed? Time
Apparently, Becky and Jenn weren’t prepared to stick to their guns. And they feel like Andrei is the reason that Libby is still sticking to hers.
It’s not just about principle for Libby
She points out that Andrei’s green card renewal interview is coming soon. If Charlie attacks him again — like he did last year — it could turn into a weapon against Andrei’s continued citizenship.
Would that be such a bad thing?
Becky jokes that perhaps Andrei will be deported, because of course she does not like Andrei. Libby is very unhappy with her remark and remains defensive of her husband.
Libby does believe in forgivingBut because Charlie is not showing any remorse or changing his behavior, she cannot open her family to that again. Meanwhile, her sisters think that Andrei is isolating Libby from the family. It’s complex.
Please no
We then see Megan’s feet, which Charlie assures us are lovely by foot standards. She is selling feet pics on OnlyFans, and made $70,000 doing that just last year. She and Charlie are happy despite their isolation from most of the family. In their eyes, Andrei is a manipulator who has turned everyone against Charlie.
Jenny Slatten and Sumit Singh
The two of them are apparently enjoying their honeymoon. To the point where they discovered that their bed is noisy, especially when the headboard hits the wall repeatedly. Honestly? Good for them.
Sumit wants more
Many people have different vacation styles. Jenny would like to just relax in a new environment, which is relatable. Sumit wants to go do some activities, which works way better on reality TV. Sumit wins.
Jenny does not want to go ziplining
It looks terrifying, and no matter how secure the cable, it’s pretty daunting. Jenny would not describe herself as adventurous. She lets Sumit go first before she takes the plunge.
She does it!
Jenny seems to have fun, so we’re happy for her.
Sumit is also happy
He praises Jenny for doing this with him. He says that he is an adventurous person, and he’s happy that Jenny is able to do this with him.
He would like to try other adventures
He suggests that they try a Kama Sutra yoga class to expand their sexual horizons as newlyweds. Jenny knows what the Kama Sutra is, though it sometimes sounds like she is saying “karma sutra” when she says it.
Sumit feels that it is the path to the ultimate marital experience
We have, admittedly, some questions. Is there something that he is not getting right now?
Jenny feels that she knows enough
She points out that she is in her sixties and has been having sex for a long time. She is unsure of what she needs to learn at this point. Besides, taking a class with other students would mean people talking about her age. And she reassures Sumit that she is very happy with his performance. Still, Jenny keeps an open enough mind to promise to talk about this more with him later.
They attend a public ceremony
Jenny marvels at how this sort of thing does not really happen in America. That is complicated. India is not a monolith and neither is Hinduism, but it is also true that India does not have the same level of pluralism as the United States. A religious or spiritual ceremony is usually for believers, so most large American events are secular in nature. Jenny resolves to use the ceremony to leave the conflict with Sumit’s family behind them.
Oh, and Jenny notes that Sumit could come to the US
For her, it’s about the idea of showing him what her homeland is like and what her life is like around her own family.
Sumit is not vibing with it
To him, the idea of leaving India would mean accepting that he will never again be close with his family (the people who insulted and disowned him), which he is not prepared to do. He is shocked that Jenny would even suggest it.
Jovi Dufren and Yara Zaya
Yara’s whole world has come crashing down. Her worries about breast implants and girls nights are gone. Vladimir Putin has launched a brutal invasion of Ukraine, her homeland. Yara filmed this scene just days into the war, as Russian troops slaughtered neighborhood, flattened cars with tanks, and shelled apartment buildings.
Jovi is trying to be supportive
There are no comforting words that can assure someone whose homeland is filled with explosions and death that everything is going to be okay. It isn’t. Instead, Jovi is awkwardly trying to take care of Mylah while Yara processes it all. Sometimes, all that you can do for a loved one is help them shoulder the burden.
Yara’s family is still in Ukraine
Her mother is not — her mom is in Prague, thankfully. But many of her relatives could be in danger. Plus millions of other innocents in the path of a relentless enemy.
And there’s more
She has dozens of friends in Kyiv, and a lack of gas makes leaving the capitol next to impossible. People are dealing with food shortages and sleeping in bomb shelters.
This is hard
Just weeks ago, Yara’s mother was assuring her that all of this posturing would not lead to war. Now, Yara is seriously missing her family even more than before. She wants to see her mom.
Speaking of which
Yara and Jovi spoke to an immigration attorney about helping her family come over. For years of this show, couples received bad news due to the erstwhile administration’s anti-immigration policies. This time was different. Attorney David Rozas told Yara that the federal government had laid out plans to grant visas to Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war. Meanwhile, Yara as a green card holder can sponsor immediate family members — her mom and sisters — to come to the US.
That could potentially be very expensive
But Jovi makes good money. Yara, too, has her business. If she can splurge on herself to get nice things, Yara reasons, then she can use that money to help people she loves escape the carnage.
Yara is eager to go as soon as her green card arrives
She’s not going to Ukraine, just to Prague to visit her mom. But Jovi wants her to wait an extra two weeks so that he can return from work and go with her. Yara doesn’t know if she can wait. They are both being reasonable.
Kimberly Menzies and Usman Umar
She is feeling hurt and upset after Usman blindsided her with a totally different version of plural marriage than the one that he had portrayed to her. He introduced her to a friend whose wives live in the same house, whose wives receive the same amount of love. Then he made jokes about Kimberly’s fears and hurt feelings, she splashed him with a milkshake, and they’re both unsure about their future.
Eventually, Kimberly comes back inside
Usman at least partially apologizes … but he is unsure if they should continue to be together.
How can he introduce her to his family if she acts like this?
Kimberly reminds him that she is almost never this angry, but he points out that she cries a lot. If neither of them are happy, why get married?
Kimberly tearfully reminds him that she has put him first
For the past two years, she has prioritized Usman above all else. She has flown out to see him — this is, what, her third trip to Africa? She wants him to be patient with her because he is asking things of her that are not part of her culture. They both feel that the other is telling them what they want to hear.
They don’t split yet
In fact, the next day, Usman wakes up and gets out of bed, telling her that he’s going to drink coffee.
Usman calls his friend from the night before
He felt shocked and scandalized by Kimberly’s behavior, though of course he does not know what Usman has been telling her to string her along. Usman notes that Kimberly may be freaking out over the reality of a second wife now that it’s under serious discussion, but made herself believe that she’d accept it earlier because she didn’t want to lose Usman. She says something similar about him, but yes.
Usman is worried about bringing her to meet his family
If she acts like this in front of his mother, his mother will tell him that she doesn’t want to meet Kimberly again, and that will be the end of them.
Kimberly comes down
They apologize, discuss their feelings, and she promises that she will not act like this again — especially not in front of his family. He also promises to slip her some yammy for good behavior.
