These celebrity divorces ran the gamut from amicable to ugly, and infamous to under the radar, but they have one thing in common:
They were not cheap.
(UPDATE: As of January 2019, we likely have a new #1!)
Donald Trump and Ivana Trump
Donald Trump's divorce from Ivana Trump cost the mogul an estimated $25 million. Given that his net worth is between $1 billion and $10 billion depending on which speech you listen to these days ... he got off easy.
Michael Douglas and Diandra Douglas
Diandra Douglas got an estimated $45 million after she split with Michael Douglas in 2000; he went on to marry Catherine Zeta-Jones ... the divorce from whom is sure to be even more costly.
Phil Collins and Orianne Cevey
Phil Collins and Orianne Cevey split up in 2008, costing the Genesis singer and solo artiste a tidy $47 million. Yeah, those royalty checks from his light rock favorites are not small.
Paul McCartney and Heather Mills
Paul McCartney and Heather Mills finalized their divorce in 2008 after a tumultuous split ended their marriage at four years. Mills walked away with over $48 million, a relative bargain for Sir Paul, who is the most famous, most covered (and thus, wealthiest) entertainers to ever live and still sells concert tickets for $300 a pop ... to play stuff from his Wings years even.
James Cameron and Linda Hamilton
Director James Cameron and actress Linda Hamilton settled their divorce in 1999. Cameron had to pay out $50 million. Then he made Avatar though, so he's doing well.
Kelsey Grammer and Camille Grammer
Kelsey Grammer settled with ex-wife Camille for an estimated $60 million after their divorce became one of the most surprisingly ugly on record. Not just because Kelsey Grammer had so much money that he could cut a check for $60 million ... but because for that amount, he couldn't even legally get her to STFU on Bravo. Time to get a new lawyer.
Kenny Rogers and Marianne Rogers
Country music legend Kenny Rogers divorced his wife Marianne to the (sad) tune of $60 million. Guess gotta know when to fold 'em ... or turn that heartbreak into more hit songs to make that money back like any respectable artist in his genre.
Madonna and Guy Ritchie
Madonna's split with Guy Ritchie cost her between $76-92 million ... not sure what end of that range Guy walked away with, but he did pretty well for himself. Having learned her lesson, The Material Girl has since resolved to date and discard an endless parade of 20-something playthings.
Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva
Kevin Costner split with Cindy Silva, his college sweetheart turned wife, after 16 years of marriage. Leaving her with roughly $80 million dollars.
Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison
Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison divorced in 2004 after 21 years together; Mathison walked with $85 million, plus future royalties on two Star Wars and three Indiana Jones movies! It's not clear why she didn't get the whole Star Wars trilogy, but at least Harrison stuck it to her by making Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull after the split was finalized. On second thought no, that movie was atrocious.
Steven Spielberg and Amy Irving
Amy Irving received $100 million from Steven Spielberg, who has been with Kate Capshaw for so long and made so much more money that Amy and her $100 million are likely distant memories for him.
Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren
Following the stunning revelation of his cheating ways, Tiger Woods ponied up $100 million to his wife Elin Nordegren ... and reportedly another $10 million to his #1 mistress Rachel Uchitel so she would never spill on their relationship. The damage to his reputation and golf career may be less quantifiable, but similarly epic.
Greg Norman and Laura Andrassy
While far less publicized than Tiger's, Greg Norman's divorce from Laura Andrassy lost the Shark an estimated $103 million. Norman, formerly the world's #1 golfer, has gone on to achieve much greater success in business if you can believe that.
Garth Brooks and Sandy Mahl
Garth Brooks and college sweetheart Sandy Mahl divorced in 2001 ... and she received a stunning payout of $125 million. The days of any recording artist making that much may be long gone in the digital age ... sorry gold diggers.
Neil Diamond and Marcia Murphey
Neil Diamond divorced Marcia Murphey in 1994, and after 25 years of marriage, Murphy got half his fortune, or around $150 million. Here's hoping Neil is getting royalty checks every time "Sweet Caroline" is played at Fenway Park.
Michael Jordan and Juanita Jordan
NBA legend Michael Jordan and wife Juanita divorced after 17 years of marriage, with Juanita receiving $168 million in the settlement from His Airness. The couple has three grown children; Michael recently welcomed twins with his second wife Yvette Prieto.
Mel Gibson and Robyn Moore Gibson
Mel Gibson married Robyn Moore in 1980, and their divorce, three decades and seven children later, ranks as the biggest in Hollywood history by a landslide at a reported $425 million. Four hundred and twenty five million.
Rupert Murdoch and Anna
Rupert Murdoch's divorce in 1999 after 31 years of marriage from Anna; estimated at $1.7 billion ($2.6 billion inflation adjusted).
Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is worth $137 billion. Yes, $137 billion! If the couple, married for 25 years, did not have a prenup, MacKenzie would be entitled to half of Bezos’ fortune.
