Going into Saturday at Bethpage Black in upstate New York, the weekend thus far belongs to the buff, blonde 6 ft. 2 inch, 250 lb. Stockton, California native Ricky Barnes who has set a U.S. Open record for his 8 under 132 through 36 holes. The 28-year-old joined the PGA tour in 2003, after winning the U.S. Amateur in 2002. Following closely on his heels are Lucas Glover at 133 and Mike Weir at 132. Already finished with second-round play and currently in a three-way tie for 4th spot is David Duval with a 137. It is a strong showing for Duval, who struggled following his win at the Open Championship in 2001 and has been in a downward spiral ever since.
Rain delays have backed up play considerably. The third round got underway at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, but was suspended at 7:10 p.m. Eight groups, including the leaders did not tee-off. Sixty players made the cut.
In an effort to finish on time, third round play resumed at 7:30 a.m. Sunday. The final round action began shortly before 6:00 p.m. eastern on Sunday night, but the majority of round four action will spill into Monday.
