Country singer Toby Keith was in Norway this week performing at the Nobel Peace Prize concert and pulled a slant-eyed facial expression that has offended an Asian American group.
Here’s what went down: Actor Will Smith was singing on stage and rapped the word “yellow” and Keith, also on stage performing, stretched his eyes back in an impromptu response.
A rep for the Asian American Justice Center told TMZ that Keith’s offensive display “denigrated the Noble Peace Prize and offended Asians and Asian Americans by using a crude, racist hand gesture.”
Many joined the Toby bashing bandwagon. Media Action Network for Asians said that Keith “is telling his Asian fans ‘you don’t matter, you’re not on my radar.'”
