Serena Williams is ranked No. 1 after battering Russian third seed Dinara Safina in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 on Saturday night at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia. This is the tennis star’s 10th Grand Slam win. She has been particularly skillful at the Aussie Open event, winning the title in 2003, 2005, 2007 and now 2009.
Williams totally dominated and has won back to back majors. She took top honors at the U.S. Open championship in September. The 27 year old said, “I absolutely, clearly, love playing here. You guys root for me so much. I don’t get that everywhere. So thank you so much.”
Serena is the fifth woman to win four or more Australian titles. She is the all-time money winner in women’s sports, having overtaken Annika Sorenstam. Williams earned $1.3 million for her win in Australia, bringing her career earnings to a tidy $23.5 million. Well done Serena.
The sister duo of Serena and Venus Williams also took the doubles title after beating Ai Sugiyama and Daniela Hantuchova in the finals.
