A Utah police dispatcher received a phone call on Sunday morning indicating that a young boy, Preston Scarbrough, had been observed recklessly driving a car through a stop sign and narrowly missed hitting another vehicle.

Two deputies gave chase in Plain City, Utah, approximately 45 miles from Salt Lake City. They clocked the 7-year-old boy’s speed at 40 mph and finally caught up with him when he returned the car to his parents driveway and hid inside his home.

It all began when the boy jumped into his father’s white Dodge Intrepid and fled because he didn’t want to go to church, according to Weber County Sheriff’s Captain Clint Anderson. The ensuing police chase was captured on a squad car camera – see video below.

Anderson said, “A deputy pulled into the intersection and stopped to block the intersection, turning on his lights. Instead of stopping the car, this white Intrepid turned down another street and eventually drove home.”

The youngster will not be prosecuted or issued a citation because he is considered too young. His father has been counseled by officers to hide the car keys to prevent future problems. He has also confiscated his son’s driving video games.
