Bubba Smith Found Dead: Former NFL Player and 'Police Academy' Actor

Former NFL player Charles "Bubba" Smith died this morning at his Los Angeles area residence.  He was 66.

According to TMZ, a 911 call was made from the Baldwin Hills home of the athlete at 12:54 p.m. Wednesday by a caretaker who discovered the body.

The Los Angeles coroner's office has not yet determined a cause of death, but officials believe that he died of natural causes.

Smith played nine NFL seasons spanning 1967-1976.  He was a defensive end and tackle for the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders, and Houston Oilers.  The Colts won Super Bowl V while he was on board.

He went on to a second career in Hollywood as a movie and TV actor.  In his most notable role, he played Moses Hightower in the Police Academy series of films.

Bubba and Dick Butkus were spokesmen for Miller Lite beer for many years.
