Disney has released the first promo pictures from Tim Burton‘s Alice in Wonderland,” featuring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Aussie actress Mia Wasikowska.

Burton, known for his dark and quirky films, retells Lewis Carroll’s classic with his own style of surrealism.

“It has been Burton-ized” is how producer Richard Zanuck describes the director’s vision of the Lewis Carroll classic. Many elements are familiar, from the enigmatic Caterpillar (Alan Rickman) to the fierce Jabberwock (Christopher Lee). But none has been presented in this sort of visually surreal fashion.

“We finished shooting in December after only 40 days,” Zanuck says. Now the live action is being merged with CG animation and motion-capture creatures, and then transferred into 3-D.

Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, Anne Hathaway as The White Queen, and 19-year-old newcomer Mia Wasikowska, an Austrailian actress best-known for HBO’s In Treatment, has been cast as Alice.

Also featured in the film are Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum, Stephen Fry as The Cheshire Cat, Alan Rickman as the Caterpillar, and Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts.

After looking at these promotional photos, we can’t wait to see the trailer.

The film is scheduled for release March 5, 2010.
