Despite a frigid temperature that hovered just above zero and a fierce windchill, a million people gathered in Times Square to ring in the New Year by watching the famous Ball Drop. An estimated 100 million viewers tuned in to witness it on television.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg pushed the lever that would begin the 60 second countdown on the 11,875 lb. orb made of 2,068 Waterford crystals and 32,256 LEDs.
