Chaz Bono, daughter of Cher and Sonny Bono, is in the process of becoming a man. Literally. He was a she, and he’s going for the change in front of the whole world.

That takes serious … well, you know.

With Jennifer Ella by his side, he could handle all the issues that he had to deal with during his sex change, but having to do it in the public eye was the hardest.

“Probably the first thing that was an incredible hurdle was that I wasn’t going to be able to do this privately like most people,” Chaz told Good Morning America.

“That took a really long time to get over.”

But the longtime gay-rights activist says that the sex change or the public nature of it doesn’t change his feelings about being a spokesman for the movement.

“If by being public about it other people can see this and not have to struggle about it, I’m really happy about that,” the former Chastity Bono says.

“I’ve been an activist in the LGBT community for a long time. I think noting’s changed, I’m just a little bit more focused on the ‘T’ now than I was on the ‘L’ or the ‘G.’ “

And now that he’s faced those fears of going public?

“I needed to work through things that scared me in order to start this journey. At this point, nothing scares me,” he said. “Life is just great now, just really great.”
