Some moments on The Kardashians capture moments that we already watched play out in the public sphere.
More than any other reality series, this family takes people behind the headlines and photo ops.
A lot more goes into the looks that they sport at red carpet events than most people might think.
Yes, that’s true even when the Kardashians don’t seem to really wow at the Met Gala.
On Season 2, Episode 9, we saw the buildup ahead of that red carpet event.
Kim felt nervous. And Pete Davidson was there to support her every step of the way. It was his first on-screen appearance on the show. But will it also be his last?
Preparation, preparation, preparation
Kim Kardashian was preparing for the Met Gala. Infamously, she wore a particular piece of history — Marilyn Monroe’s dress. Kim went to extreme measures to lose weight to wear it. Despite outcry from health experts, she does not believe that this was unhealthy.
Kim noted that everything had to be perfect
During the episode, she told the camera that she had to get into the dress and then essentially smuggle herself to the Met. This meant wearing her own brand’s shapewear under it and nothing else, with a simple robe over it for the car ride.
But Kim would not be making the drive alone
She was still dating Pete Davidson at the time. He showed up, sharply dressed and handsome as ever, to tower over her and attend as her date.
Pete thought back to a previous Met Gala
Once, he asked for Kim’s number at the Met Gala — he shot his shot. And she turned him down. That was just one year earlier.
Pete recalled her finding a sweet way to turn him down
At the time, she used that she was wearing gloves as an excuse, apologetically saying that she could not give out her number at the time. Pete felt really touched, sharing that he thought about it later, how she really knew how to let people down gently. This time, Kim noted, she was not wearing gloves, and would be happy to give him her number. But he of course already has it.
En route, they had some cute moments
Obviously (and thankfully), the show did not make viewers sit through this miserable traffic. Screens flitted back and forth among the Kardashians and Jenners, but we saw Kim and Pete show some PDA.
Kim had very specific ideas for her red carpet debut with Pete
Initially, she had imagined it being something unrelated to fashion. And perhaps even when she has brown hair, not her current platinum blonde. But life doesn’t always work out how you plan it. Not even if you’re Kim.
Meanwhile, Pete had his own ideas …
He joked that his first public debut with Kim should be at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, with the two of them on the receiving end of a lot of slime. Alas, it was not to be.
Over time, Kim became increasingly preoccupied with Khloe’s look. Her sister, plagued for years by self-esteem and body image issues, was sporting an ample pair of glasses. Kim hoped that Khloe would work up the confidence to show her face on the red carpet.
Kim arrived, and continued to get ready
There were little stations for people to touch up their style and outfits, so Kim received the finishing touches ahead of her walking the red carpet. And it was a success. Sure, the outfit proved to be deeply controversial, and no one in the family really went all out like the best Met Gala outfits do, but still.
And now that it’s over
Kim reflected on how she loves making things happen, even if others don’t share her vision. The biggest success, in her mind, is that Khloe felt confident. Kris also made a similar statement.
And now for the disordered eating
We’re not being dramatic. If you starve yourself and then binge on pizza and doughnuts, you’re probably doing your body more of a disservice than if you’d just eaten those same foods every day. Anyway, this episode may end up being a bit of a farewell to Pete. Fans suspect that he has received a lot of editing after he and Kim split. No one’s sure if we’ll see him on the show again.
