There is cause for great celebration today in the Big Apple. At midnight it became legal in the state of New York for same-sex couples to become legally wed.

Over 800 partners have already applied for marriage licenses — with county clerks across the State hard-pressed to process them all.

Beginning at 12:00 a.m., couples from Niagara Falls to Long Island began the process, with most of the action in NYC. Partners stood in lines while clutching bouquets, some decked out in tuxedos and wedding dresses.

Jessica Plourde, a friend of Bitten and Bound, was on hand to witness the joyous occasion and capture the scene. When asked to share her feelings regarding what she witnessed, she admitted, “I cried, it was pretty emotional to see people do something I take for granted.”

The victory occurred on June 24, when New York became the sixth and largest State to recognize same-sex unions. Today it became reality.

New York resident and actress Cynthia Nixon spoke with Newsweek and said, “My girlfriend and I have been engaged for more than two years and we had not made plans to get married anywhere else. New York did us proud that night.”

Other States where same-sex marriages can be legally performed are Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington D.C..

New Jersey, Maryland and Rhode Island do not facilitate same-sex marriage, but recognize same-sex marital unions performed in other jurisdictions.
