It has been twelve years since the World Trade Center and Pentagon were attacked by terrorist. We’ve canvassed Twitter and Instagram this morning for some of the comments and images shared by the celebrity community and the White House.

The September 11 attacks were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks launched by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda upon the United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Two planes rammed the Twin Towers in Manhattan, one flew into the Pentagon and one plane was brought down by passengers who opted to fight back. It crashed in Pennsylvania.

In addition to those killed as a direct result of the plane crashes, it was the deadliest incident for firefighters in the history of the United States. The attacks killed 2,996 people, including the 19 hijackers. Of that total, 442 were emergency workers who were trapped when the towers collapsed. Nearly all of the victims were civilians; 55 military personnel were among those killed at the Pentagon. More than 90 countries lost citizens in the dual attacks on the World Trade Center.
