A new Nine West ad campaign tries to sell women shoes by placing them in situations many are decrying as sexist.
In one photo, for instance, a purse is caring a pair of flip-flops while the faceless woman featured in it does the “Anticipatory Walk of Shame.”
On another, the company writes that its footwear is great for “starter husband hunting.”
Senior Vice President of Marketing Erika Szychowki tells the New York Times that the tag lines are simply reflective of current times and vernacular.
“We have to change the way we talk about occasions because women are modern now and shop for a different reason,” she says. “‘Starter husband hunting,’ for example, might once have been called night-on-the-town shoes.”
Maybe.
But many Facebook users find the ads offensive to females, with one writing:
“Women are hunting success and goals, dreams and visions. Not husbands.”
Past ads also accused of being sexist include this Swiffer poster that depicts Rosie the Riveter holding a steamer and this Equinox Gym billboard.
What do think of this Nine West campaign? Is it sexist?
